nocturnal

sky turns from navy

to an electric blue

broken by an orb of pink

growing slowly

over the Mississippi

A time not seen by many

when the day seems to slow

then speed up again

A man rides alone on his bicycle

weighed down by goods

from the corner 24 hour mart

a spider spins her web

invisibly in the corner of my porch

the air weighs heavy

alluding to the heat to come

a rare silence lulls over

the normally bustling street

broken only by the first birds chirping

and a siren perhaps miles away

as the world wakes up

i drink my tea to relax

smoke the last cigarette of the day

unable to sleep when the world is dark

finally able to lie down and let go

My local police department put this cringe-worthy video on their Facebook page and I thought I’d share.

My local police department just released this video showing all of the cool action packed things they go through to “protect our city”

With flashy editing, ¬†hard rocking music in the background, and a dispatch sending out the officers on some hard hitting cases, this video makes me wonder who paid for it and the purpose of it. I sincerely hope that this was not put in the budget and paid for by taxpayers. I think that it might have been created by the Career and Technology center, the local community college in my area. They have a video production class and from what I’ve gathered, they are eager to put together videos as practice. I sincerely hope that this was the case. They have put together videos for other businesses in town, but I’m not sure what the payment situation was as I had no part of it.

Second, what is the purpose of this video. Is it to make sure that the Cape Girardeau police department gets a good public image in light of how police officers in the media have been portrayed? I can’t help but notice that everyone in the video who is being “arrested” is white. I also can’t help but notice the subtle “Respect Police” about 3/4 of the way through the video.

I don’t recognize any of the actors who are playing the people getting pulled over and arrested. Maybe they are people from the school I spoke of earlier, or they might even be police officers themselves.

This video made me cringe pretty hard because it is my home town and I recognize all of the crime scenes. For example, if you have seen the movie Gone Girl, you can clearly see that someone is being arrested in front of a sign for “The Bar”, a set that was used in the film when they filmed it in my area. This is the pride and joy of Cape Girardeau, our big break. The film Gone Girl was filmed almost entirely in my hometown, and maybe this video of the police is to show for it.

I have been pulled over by the police before, and I’ve had multiple encounters with them when it wasn’t me on the spot. They should be a public service, why would they need a commercial? I could totally see this on a public access channel. I actually found it on Facebook, one of my other friends had commented that her boyfriend, who is a police officer, was in it and she was so proud of him.

The funny thing is is that my town is actually really safe. Not crime-free(though no city is), but you can definitely be a single girl and walk from one side of downtown to the other with minimal harassment. Maybe this is because there are so many police officers. I can easily count 10 police cars on my way home from work after closing the bar. I sometimes get pulled over and asked to take a breathalyzer test because I reek of alcohol. I always tell them that its because I’m a bartender and it has actually gotten me out of a tight spot a few times when I did have a drink or two at work, which I rarely do and its usually just a glass of wine while I close. I look down on people who drink and drive.

Anyway, this video chapped my khaki’s a little and I wanted to share. Have a good day!

Creepy things where I work

wpid-20150517_022109.jpg

I found a creepy statue of a lions head hidden outside of my workplace when I was exploring the place Saturday night. I work in one of the oldest buildings in Cape Girardeau, and there is a lot of history. Most of the building even burned down in 1990, but they restored it for the most part. There is a giant empty space upstairs that we use as storage, but I love it. It is two stories tall and filled with things from the restaurant that was in our building before us, The Royal N’orleans. You never know what you’re going to find. There were about five of these creepy lions heads. This one looked like it had seen some things.

I have had people come into Katy O’s while I was bartending as say that they used to work there when it was the N’orleans. They would always tell me about the “ghost” and ask if I’ve seen anything weird. They all would say the same things about it too. They said that when the restaurant was the N’orleans, all of the tables would be set up in fine dining fashion, as it was one of the nicest restaurants in town. Frequently, all of the table set up in the corner table near the window under a portrait of a lady would be discovered laying on the ground when the opening crew would come in the morning. I have personally never seen anything creepy, but I am in the restaurant alone sometimes. I’m not superstitious but sometimes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up for no reason. Or I’ll see something moving out of the corner of my eye, there are a lot of windows, mirrors, and reflective surfaces in the restaurant, so I reason that it was someone walking by outside and there is nothing to be alarmed about. The kitchen manager who is also sometimes in the restaurant by herself said that she thought that she saw someone moving out of the corner of her eye in the kitchen when she first walked in.

The only really creepy thing that happened to me happened a few months ago. I was closing up, and usually the last thing I do is turn off the music. I turn it off after I turn off the lights because we have plenty of green ambient lighting that stays on all night. I’m finished with everything, the last guests have left and I turn off the music. I notice that there is a loud, high pitched sound coming from the men’s restroom, which is in the bar area. There are two doors leading into the men’s room, so I open the first and realize that the sound is almost deafening, and it sounds like an alarm going off. I took out my camera on my phone to record the sound and get the hell out of there. I texted the video to my boss who asked me to check to make sure all of the faucets were off but by this time I was already almost home. I was extremely freaked out. The next day he said that it was because the faucet in the upstairs bathroom was left trickling over night, but the sound was so loud that I don’t know if I believe it. A few weeks later, the kitchen manager mentioned that she heard the same thing when she opened that day. The only person I had told about it was my boss, and he had laughed it off so he didn’t tell anyone. I am still wondering what it was.

Here is the video of the creepy sound that I sent at work. Sorry it is vertical. I was in a rush to get the fuck out of there since I’m a little scaredy cat.

Random Idea of the Night

Previously, I had a small candle business that I called L’allumer Candle. I know now that I should have named it something simple, and I probably shouldn’t have invested so much money into it right away. I am thinking about rebranding my candle making into Cape Girardeau Candle, perhaps. This would really open the doors to the local market. I need to make a few simple candle scents in pretty containers to start out with. Maybe theme some of them, such as “Rose Garden” and “River Walk” or something. That would probably be a huge hit in my area. This would also make it easy to get the media behind me. I am contemplating how I want to go about this. I will need to get in with the craft fairs, plus a little door to door selling. I will need to buy local as much as I can, and make sure that my product is great. I will probably have to make a bunch up to give away for free to people who write about what I’m doing (hint hint) and come up with some facebook specials. Maybe I won’t make the facebook page until I have some reasonable support behind me. I want to do all glass containers, because I feel like my tin containers don’t look as good. Maybe I should dabble in votives as well? I’m not sure. This is just one of those 3am craft ideas that pop into my head. I hope I don’t forget about it before tomorrow.

I also need to think of a domain name for this blog, but I guess I’m not in a rush.
